Amosartan, a prescription medicine used for treating high blood pressure, is building a good reputation in the market. This product, first launched about a year ago, is expanding its levarage with steady growth, newly approved as an initial therapy, and recently received IR52 award. Amosartan, the fixed dose combination of Amlodipine Camsylate and Losartan Potassium, overtook Novartis's Exforge, amlodipine and valsartan, in number of prescription early this year and now is increasing the lead. Together with Cozaar XQ, the brand name promoted by MSD, Amosartan recorded 24.9 billion won sales during the first half of 2010. Taking the fact that Exforge was introduced to the market about 2 years earlier than Amosartan into account, the growth of Amosartan is quite significant.
This July, Amosantan recieved an additional approval as an initial therapy for the treatment of severe hypertension patients by proving superior blood pressure management and safety profile over amlodipine monotherapy. It was the first case among hypertension combination drugs in CCB + ARB class, and made the market expectation higher. Previously in 2008, KFDA officially applied the concept of 'Incrementally Modified New Drugs' in healthcare policies, defining IMNDs as drugs with improved safety, efficacy, or usefulness over previously approved drugs by application of technical innovation. Amosartan is the first IMND approved by KFDA. It is also the first product developed in South Korea to be co-marketed with MSD under the trademark Cozaar XQ, hence it has been viewed as an important milestone in the Korean pharmaceutical industry. With the recognition of significant growth and innovation, the researchers involved in the development of Amosartan received IR52 award by KOITA given in the name of the Minister of Science and Technology on 27 July. Based on the positive aspects of promotional activities and partnership with MSD, Hanmi is planning to increase the sales of Amosartan not only in Korea but also in ex-Korean markets. |
